Why do owners relinquish their dogs to shelters???
Problematic BehaviorsLead to Break in Human–Animal Bond
Using an owner survey, this project found that owners relinquishing their dogs to shelters were significantly less attached, and they rated their dog's behavior lower compared to continuing dog owners. Additionally, relinquishing owners were more likely to have more children in the household than continuing owners. Although there was no difference in the frequency of use of corrective training techniques in either the relinquishing or continuing groups, the use of corrective training techniques was associated with greater dissatisfaction with the dog's leash-walking and overall behavior. These results implicate a break in the human-animal bond due to problematic behaviors. If we inform owners to choose their dogs wisely based on compatible behaviors and encourage adequate training to ensure acceptable behaviors are maintained, we may be able to enhance the human-animal bond and decrease the likelihood dogs will be relinquished to shelters.

Regardless of good intentions, most dogs don’t receive proper training and socializing at the right age. Hence why “bad behaviors” manifest, continue, and eventually cause owners to break. Many of this can be due to when the puppy was obtained, or sudden struggles financially so puppy gets put at the bottom of the list till they’re older. However the reason, it’s without a worry! Old dogs CAN learn new tricks, and rather well.
With positive, reward based reinforcement techniques Adult Dog Basics gives you, and you’re dog, a safe foundation of communication. Once you understand how to “talk” to your dog, and understand what he’s saying back to you, getting consistence responses to commands will be a breeze! Also, you’ll be eliminating that frustrating, miscommunication in which doesn’t benefit anyone.
- Hands on work with dog teaching basic commands like sit, down, leave it (Don’t touch that!) drop it, coming when called, stay, and leash walking skills.
- Reviewing unwanted behaviors and redirecting them, not scolding them. Solving problems barking, digging, jumping chewing, yard escaping, door scratching, and guarding.
- Desensitizing!! A technique we use on dogs that are already exposed to, and passed their puppy stage however still need reshaping to things they are scared of.
-Extra leashing walking activities to stress the importance of being able to control our pets.
Remember, all of our training does not involve choke chains, prong collars, shock collars, or stern corrections. We get successful results consistently by following our scientific method of training.
